Sump Pump Replacement Cost (2026)

Replacing a sump pump costs $300 to $1,200, and most homeowners pay about $650 for a 1/3 HP submersible swapped into the existing pit. The pump is $150 to $400 of that. Replacing the check valve and float at the same time adds little and is worth doing; a pit that has cracked or silted up turns it into a $900 to $2,500 job.

How much does it cost to replace a sump pump?
Replacing a sump pump costs $300 to $1,200, with most homeowners paying about $650 for a 1/3 HP submersible installed in the existing pit. A pedestal pump swap is $250 to $800. Replacing the pit liner as well raises the total to $900 to $2,500.
How often should a sump pump be replaced?
Every 7 to 10 years for a submersible pump, and up to 25 years for a pedestal pump. A pump that runs constantly because of a high water table wears out sooner. Replacing it on schedule costs $650; finding out it failed during a storm costs a flooded basement plus an emergency call-out.
Should I repair or replace a sump pump?
Repair if the pump is under five years old and the fault is a stuck float switch, a failed check valve or debris — $150 to $600. Replace if the motor has failed, the pump is past seven years, or it runs but no longer moves water, since a new pump is only a few hundred dollars more than a motor repair.
How much does sump pump repair cost?
Sump pump repair costs $150 to $600. Replacing a float switch is $150 to $300, a check valve $100 to $250, and clearing a clogged intake or frozen discharge line $150 to $350. Motor failure is not worth repairing on most residential pumps — replacement at about $650 costs little more.
How long does a sump pump replacement take?
One to three hours for a like-for-like swap in an existing pit. Add two to four hours if the check valve and discharge piping are being replaced, and most of a day if the pit liner is being dug out and replaced.
Can I replace a sump pump myself?
In an existing pit with an existing discharge line, yes. It is a matter of disconnecting the discharge at a union, lifting the old pump out, setting the new one at the same height and testing it with a bucket of water. Material cost is $150 to $400. Anything involving a new circuit or a new pit is a professional job.

What drives the price

Pump type and horsepower
Pedestal pumps are cheapest and simplest to swap. Submersibles cost more and sit at the bottom of a pit full of water, which adds labour.
What else has failed
Check valves and float switches age alongside the pump. Replacing all three at once costs little more than the pump alone and removes the two most common causes of the next failure.
The state of the pit
A basin that is cracked, too small, or full of silt and gravel has to be dealt with before a new pump is worth installing.
When you call
A scheduled replacement is a routine visit. A replacement during a storm, with water rising, carries an emergency premium of $150 to $600.

Signs the pump is near the end

It runs constantly, or cycles on and off every few seconds. It makes grinding or rattling noises. It runs but the water level in the pit does not drop. There is visible rust on the housing or the discharge. Or it is simply past seven years old — the age is reason enough on its own.

Test it twice a year by pouring a bucket of water into the pit and watching it switch on, empty the pit and switch off. A pump that fails this test in October is a $650 job. The same pump failing in a March storm is a much larger one.

What a sump pump replacement involves

The power is unplugged, the discharge pipe is disconnected at its union or rubber coupling, and the old pump is lifted out of the pit. The pit is cleaned of silt and gravel, which is often what killed the old pump. The new pump is set level on a firm base at the same height, the discharge is reconnected — with a new check valve if the old one is more than a few years old — and the pump is tested by filling the pit with water.

Choose the replacement by matching, or slightly exceeding, the old pump's horsepower and discharge capacity. A cast-iron submersible outlasts a plastic one and costs $50 to $150 more. If the old pump ran often, this is the moment to add a battery backup, $600 to $1,800 installed, because the pump is most likely to be needed when the power is out.
